Is it a good idea to have an item that rename a pve char? I have a pve char for more than 1 year and i don't want to delete it coz of armors but i don't like the names (uncool+ doesn't suit the armor). Any chance that we'll have a rename card in the future?

Back on subject, they may someday allow us to change our looks, somewhat, but I suspect they will never, ever allow us to change a character's name.

If you think about it, there are plenty of problems that ability would cause, and absolutely no practical benefit to the community as a whole.

Theres has to be a coding problem with making this work. Its not as easy as "Click Here to change your name button". Gaile has said before that its not that easy.. Maybe alot of stuff is tied to your name, and the game is built around your characters name. Such as all the quest that say "Hey, Dunedains Last Hope" I need you to blah blah blah.. Its not as easy as /setcommand/change/name..

I, for one, know that I would like this ability. Even if it were only a one time thing per account, I'd be happy. I'm not sure how hard the process would be though, and if there's any way that Anet could go about it short of having people do it manually for you via an automated request, and that's just not practical. I know it's possible to change a character's name, but I don't know how involved that process is.

I do know that my boyfriend once got a ban for having an inappropriate name. They gave him the option of deleting the character or having it renamed. He chose to rename it and any (or most) of the existing items he had customized still have his old, inappropriate name.

People ask for this all the time. The heart of the matter is that allowing characters to be renamed causes a ton more problems than it solves in the confusion that would result - not the least of which is the opportunity character renaming would afford scammers.

IIRC, what they have said is that too much is tied to that char name ie ignore/friend list etc for it to change and they probably will not allow it. I could be wrong but I do seem to remember Gaile saying no.

There are many ways to solve this. like, after you change a toon's name, you can't change it again for a year. and if they can change inappropriate names, they can let us change our legit names.

About what Gaile said, it's just like when she said that the reason we can't logout a toon right to the characters screen, is that it would danger our toons if we leave gw on while away from the pc, but just a few months later they implanted it... excuses excuses. I would be happier if she would be more fair and honest with the community, and would be willing to say more that she just don't know, or that she will pass the ideas on.

The name you see in the ignore/friends list is only a mask. it represents an account id. test this with two other users. user #1 creates a toon, you add its name to your friend list. that user deletes the toon, and user #2 creates a toon with the same name. guess what? the name in your friend list will still show user #1.

I think it is great that you cant rename. There are very childish and offensive names that people have chose. Whether through lazyness or immaturity.

And I am glad to see they are stuck with them now that they have invested in the character and want a decent name. Maybe they will learn? or Maybe not.

I have to agree, being able to rename characters would just cause problems. I can understand why some people would like to be able to rename them, but it just goes to show that you should always think up good names beforehand, and not just mash in any random thing that comes to mind.

I know it's been mentioned many times before but I think being able to alter a characters appearence is more important. I can't see how that would cause any problems and I think it's something almost everyone wants. Or does everyone still have the same taste of hair styles/colour after almost two years?

If there's a renaming system, customized stuffs such as armor will hurt Anet for sure. Also it may benefit scammers for deleting names...

@foo Stop hating on Gaile. She didn't deliberately mislead us on the logout thing. The security issue was true. Still is if you share a pc and aren't careful. Anet heard everybody saying how much they wanted it and gave it to us anyuway, for which I'm grateful lol, saves me tons of time when jockying stuff around. I have seen her numerous times here on the forums and in chat in LA or Kamadan or wherever admit she doesn't know an answer and jump to send emails/info to devs etc to get things done. As to the char names being a mask in your following post, I'm aware of what you're talking about, I was just repeating what I recalled her saying before.

I'm glad we can't change our names. I'll sit there for an hour at least configuring the look and name of my characters. Alot of times it's tough when some nooblet has already come along, used a name he "thought sounded cool" and knows nothing about who or where the name comes from and then stopped playing GW.
